Get the filter in your furnace ready for autumn/winter.
Inspecting the filter in your furnace is an important maintenance step. Here’s how to do it:
- Turn Off the Furnace: Ensure the furnace is powered down to avoid any accidents.
- Locate the Filter: The filter is usually found in the return air duct or near the blower compartment. It might be behind a removable panel.
- Remove the Filter: Take out the filter carefully. Note its orientation for when you replace it.
- Check the Condition: Look for dust, dirt, or any blockages. If it’s visibly dirty or clogged, it’s time to clean or replace it.
- Clean or Replace: If it’s reusable, you can clean it according to the manufacturer’s instructions. If it’s disposable, replace it with a new one.
- Reinsert the Filter: Make sure it’s positioned correctly, matching the airflow direction indicated on the filter.
- Turn the Furnace Back On: Once everything is back in place, you can turn the furnace on again.
